John C. Campbell Folk School: One Folk School Road 828-837-2775 or 800-365-5724. Nations oldest folk school since 1925. Crafts, music, dance, other mountain traditions in one week or weekend classes. National historic distric. Craft shop. Only 10 minutes away. Designated an Historical District by the National Register of Historic Places, the Folk School's 27 buildings are the scene of many services to the community, a variety of special events, and an internationally recognized crafts instruction program. The 372-acre campus features fully equipped craft studios where people from all over the world come to learn pottery, weaving, spinning, dyeing, blacksmithing, stained glass, basketry, wood carving, woodworking, broom making, dollmaking, quilting and many other crafts. In addition to crafts, the Folk School has been instrumental in preserving mountain music and dance traditions. A awmill, meeting rooms, covered outdoor dance pavilion, nature trail, craft shop, vegetable garden and rustic lodgings are scattered across the picturesque campus. While many buildings are in the style of typical Appalachian farm buildings some were designed by a Belgian architect in a Romantic European style, adding to the unique ambiance and quickly impressing on any first-time visitor that something special is going on here. www.folkschool.org

Nantahala National Forest Area

Lake Cherokee. Picnic shelter and fishing pier. Only 10 miles from Murphy. Take US 64W for 8 miles, turn right on 294 go for a couple of miles more.
Hiwassee Lake. Set in the midst of the Nantahala National Forest, this scenic mountain lake has more than 163 miles of shoreline and 6,090 surface acres. The lake is located near Murphy, NC , and is accessible from US Highway 64. Bass, walleye, bluegil, sunfish and crappie inhabit the waters of Hiwassee Lake. Highway 64/74 West to 294. Make a right and take 294 N about 10 miles past Hiwasee Dam High School (okay, no jokes about the "Dam School") Make a right on Hiwasee Dam Access road for about 5 miles to the Hiwasee Dam and Hiwasee Marina.
Recreational Opportunities are: Auto Touring, boating, Camping, FIshing, Horseback Riding, Hunting, Picnic, Water Sports and Wildlife Viewing.
Fires Creek Area. Fishing, Hiking trail and Horse Trail (Bristol Horse Camp $5). Take US 64E Turn left on SR 1302 for 3.7 miles and left on Fires Creek road (SR 1344)
Jack Rabbit Mountain. May 1 -Oct 31. Swimming beach on Chatuge Lake. Popular for watersports. Hot showers. Picnic shelters. Evening Programs in season. $3/car for day-use $12/site for camping. Take US 64E (about 36 miles) turn right on NC 175 for 2.5 miles, turn right on SR 1155.
Nantahala Gorge. Popular rafting and kayaking area with 8.5 miles of whitewater. Local outfitters provide boats, guides, etc. Take US 19, between Almond and Topton.

Golf & Tennis
Cherokee Hills Golf and Country Club. A championship, 18 hole (par 72) golf course. Also available are tennis courts, driving range, practice putting green, pool and fitness trail. (828-837-5853.) Only 10 minutes away.
